Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Babel up to 7.29.5. This affects an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
Babel is a compiler for writing next generation JavaScript. Prior to 8.0.0-rc.6 and 7.29.6, @babel/core affected by an arbitrary file read via a sourceMappingURL comment. Using @babel/core to compile maliciously crafted code can allow an attacker to read any source map from the system that is running Babel, if the attacker controls the input source code, can read the output source code, and knows the path of the source map file that they want to read. This vulnerability is fixed in 8.0.0-rc.6 and 7.29.6.
The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-49356 since 05/29/2026. The exploitability is told to be difficult. An attack has to be approached locally. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
Upgrading to version 7.29.6 or 8.0.0-rc.5 eliminates this vulnerability.
