Linux Kernel up to 7.0.10 batman-adv batadv_tp_recv_ack role initialization

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability marked as critical has been reported in Linux Kernel up to 7.0.10. This impacts the function batadv_tp_recv_ack of the component batman-adv. This manipulation of the argument role causes initialization. This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2026-52931. No exploit is available. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.0.10. Affected by this vulnerability is the function batadv_tp_recv_ack of the component batman-adv. The manipulation of the argument role with an unknown input leads to a initialization vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-665. The product does not initialize or incorrectly initializes a resource, which might leave the resource in an unexpected state when it is accessed or used. The impact remains unknown. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: batman-adv: tp_meter: avoid use of uninit sender vars batadv_tp_recv_ack() and batadv_tp_stop() are only valid for tp_vars in the BATADV_TP_SENDER role. When called with a BATADV_TP_RECEIVER role, it proceeds to read sender-only members that were never initialized, leading to undefined behavior. This can be triggered when a node that is currently acting as a receiver in an ongoing tp_meter session receives a malicious ACK packet. Guard against this by checking tp_vars->role immediately after the lookup and bailing out if it is not BATADV_TP_SENDER, before any of those members are accessed.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-52931 since 06/09/2026. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/24/2026).

Upgrading to version 5.10.258, 5.15.209, 6.1.175, 6.6.142, 6.12.92, 6.18.34 or 7.0.11 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 0e388af04b3958b178a1b979527f93eb46ea1fee/1a21c055f66e78973712a4a1be2a554f1ee2e4f4/9884c9c02d3c90e9215db3c5128f59045d20ae91/53f931e0146ae5bdab4cba302646827d06b3794b/ecdaa3e4d91040206afe21bc8a0d1198a0971ff3/dc2ae5fbd2dadc26735092f140b246841d969a11/85397e48afe6be83ffca5ad3f4792296bfc81d3d/6c65cf23d4c6170fcf5714c32aa64689718cb142 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
