Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.174/6.6.139/6.12.85/6.18.26/7.0.3. This affects the function io_poll_get_ownership of the component io_uring. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a data authenticity vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-345. The product does not sufficiently verify the origin or authenticity of data, in a way that causes it to accept invalid data. The impact remains unknown. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: io_uring/poll: fix signed comparison in io_poll_get_ownership() io_poll_get_ownership() uses a signed comparison to check whether poll_refs has reached the threshold for the slowpath: if (unlikely(atomic_read(&req->poll_refs) >= IO_POLL_REF_BIAS)) atomic_read() returns int (signed). When IO_POLL_CANCEL_FLAG (BIT(31)) is set in poll_refs, the value becomes negative in signed arithmetic, so the >= 128 comparison always evaluates to false and the slowpath is never taken. Fix this by casting the atomic_read() result to unsigned int before the comparison, so that the cancel flag is treated as a large positive value and correctly triggers the slowpath.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-52933 since 06/09/2026. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/25/2026).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 322521 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2026-52933), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.1.175, 6.6.140, 6.12.86, 6.18.27 or 7.0.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 81bf96b0abbfa4cd47ea32e12596aed3855fb2f3/cf522703d4f194991615763697ae25a3f9539763/fc47043f3d9af3efa407665b47f8378ec691ba18/ea0697129807d718037f618221037aa0660ee3c5/c6d191164dc81838d8dbf452a6000f68c558d1ae/326941b22806cbf2df1fbfe902b7908b368cce42 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (322521), EUVD (EUVD-2026-38703) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2026-2056). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
