A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System) (affected version not known). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component Active Directory. The manipulation as part of a LDAP Request leads to a input validation vulnerability. Active Directory on Microsoft Windows 2000 Server SP4, XP Professional SP2 and SP3, Server 2003 SP1 and SP2, and Server 2008 allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (system hang or reboot) via a crafted LDAP request.
The bug was discovered 06/10/2008. The weakness was presented 06/10/2008 by Alex with Microsoft as MS08-035 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2008-1445 since 03/21/2008. The attack can only be initiated within the local network. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 33138 (MS08-035: Vulnerability in Active Directory Could Allow Denial of Service (953235)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90443 (Active Directory Denial of Service Vulnerability (MS08-035)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS08-035 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6181.
