Linux Kernel up to 7.0.9 platform populate_enum_data infinite loop

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability categorized as critical has been discovered in Linux Kernel up to 7.0.9. Affected by this issue is the function populate_enum_data of the component Platform. The manipulation results in infinite loop. This vulnerability is cataloged as CVE-2026-53022. There is no exploit available. It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 7.0.9. Affected is the function populate_enum_data of the component platform. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a infinite loop vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-835. The product contains an iteration or loop with an exit condition that cannot be reached, i.e., an infinite loop. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: platform/x86: dell-wmi-sysman: bound enumeration string aggregation populate_enum_data() aggregates firmware-provided value-modifier and possible-value strings into fixed 512-byte struct members. The current code bounds each individual source string but then appends every string and separator with raw strcat() and no remaining-space check. Switch the aggregation loops to a bounded append helper and reject enumeration packages whose combined strings do not fit in the destination buffers. [ij: add include]

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-53022 since 06/09/2026. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 5.15.209, 6.1.175, 6.6.141, 6.12.91, 6.18.33 or 7.0.10 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 7b3dc1f764bf24eb99474a5de8173b0b43a8b071/75c738d4f27fa18a2a033de153bd40302bde6a66/ba0843c1955864401295f7ba3b420afe19f2266d/5a04f9a36930792f6d64e28d43609e158d09b665/c5683ca4949a514fbe656c6d0d08c4c126e21db9/90b118d264845f7aaf539ac49f7c75f1f29590e2/3c34471c26abc52a37f5ad90949e2e4b8027eb14 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
