Linux Kernel up to 7.0.9 Bluetooth hci_conn_request_evt lock use after free

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.0.9. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function hci_conn_request_evt of the component Bluetooth. Such manipulation of the argument lock leads to use after free. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-53072. No exploit exists. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.0.9 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function hci_conn_request_evt of the component Bluetooth. The manipulation of the argument lock with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: Bluetooth: fix locking in hci_conn_request_evt() with HCI_PROTO_DEFER When protocol sets HCI_PROTO_DEFER, hci_conn_request_evt() calls hci_connect_cfm(conn) without hdev->lock. Generally hci_connect_cfm() assumes it is held, and if conn is deleted concurrently -> UAF. Only SCO and ISO set HCI_PROTO_DEFER and only for defer setup listen, and HCI_EV_CONN_REQUEST is not generated for ISO. In the non-deferred listening socket code paths, hci_connect_cfm(conn) is called with hdev->lock held. Fix by holding the lock.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-53072 since 06/09/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/24/2026).

Upgrading to version 5.10.258, 5.15.209, 6.1.175, 6.6.141, 6.12.91, 6.18.33 or 7.0.10 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 60e3f4ff02d1f2d55bfbf2ca32a97285a9771ee4/9d4a6c0f43fc5e4d4f062e8e450e5483eb74176e/c7777f534a8018ae4bb1c80d8925af4df588a314/6b4d226d01ab7da0d2027a2a1e3a6079152e5065/541d5bf9b5afaf41090b2a3aa7b47f2db2ff801f/385b2d0468a0871fc716c549fa3b0c257c7dbcb3/c27224daf0b08efbb2b24ed64b6139b294f5473a/5c7209a341ff2ac338b2b0375c34a307b37c9ac2 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
