Linux Kernel up to 6.12.90/6.18.32/7.0.9 platform __driver_attach driver_override use after free

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.90/6.18.32/7.0.9. Impacted is the function __driver_attach of the component Platform. Such manipulation of the argument driver_override leads to use after free. This vulnerability is documented as CVE-2026-53119. There is not any exploit available. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.90/6.18.32/7.0.9. Affected by this issue is the function __driver_attach of the component platform. The manipulation of the argument driver_override with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: platform/wmi: use generic driver_override infrastructure When a driver is probed through __driver_attach(), the bus' match() callback is called without the device lock held, thus accessing the driver_override field without a lock, which can cause a UAF. Fix this by using the driver-core driver_override infrastructure taking care of proper locking internally. Note that calling match() from __driver_attach() without the device lock held is intentional. [1]

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-53119 since 06/09/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/24/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.12.91, 6.18.33 or 7.0.10 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 13d201bd840d2e2a645ef899f81342cd27ced346/2c5507010fc3b8e2bd596c63c88f6ad39a69b1c4/4dc755d86deed88789540d960e421124bad4c568/8a700b1fc94df4d847a04f14ebc7f8532592b367 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
