Details
A vulnerability was found in PostgreSQL 8.1 (Database Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-264. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
PostgreSQL 8.1 and probably later versions, when local trust authentication is enabled and the Database Link library (dblink) is installed, allows remote attackers to access arbitrary accounts and execute arbitrary SQL queries via a dblink host parameter that proxies the connection from 127.0.0.1.
The bug was discovered 06/16/2007. The weakness was presented 06/19/2007 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-3278 since 06/19/2007. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67639 (Oracle Linux 3 : postgresql (ELSA-2008-0039)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117363 (CentOS Security Update for PostgreSQL (CESA-2008:0039)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 8 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (35142), Tenable (67639), SecurityFocus (BID 27163†), OSVDB (40899†) and Secunia (SA28376†). See VDB-40443, VDB-40442, VDB-40441 and VDB-40435 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
