Details
A vulnerability has been found in Rclone up to 1.74.2 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the component Configuration Handler. The manipulation of the argument remote with an unknown input leads to a missing authentication vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-306. The product does not perform any authentication for functionality that requires a provable user identity or consumes a significant amount of resources. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Rclone is a command-line program to sync files and directories to and from different cloud storage providers. From 1.46.0 until 1.74.3, rclone rcd --rc-serve accepts unauthenticated GET and HEAD requests to paths of the form: /[remote:path]/object. The remote value is parsed from the URL and passed to normal backend initialization. Inline remote configuration can set backend options that execute local commands during initialization. As a result, a single unauthenticated GET or HEAD request can execute a command as the rclone process user. This vulnerability is fixed in 1.74.3.
The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-49980 since 06/02/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
