Apache HTTP Server 2.2.4 Prefork MPM code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Apache HTTP Server 2.2.4 (Web Server). Affected is some unknown functionality of the component Prefork MPM. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

Apache httpd 2.0.59 and 2.2.4, with the Prefork MPM module, allows local users to cause a denial of service via certain code sequences executed in a worker process that (1) stop request processing by killing all worker processes and preventing creation of replacements or (2) hang the system by forcing the master process to fork an arbitrarily large number of worker processes. NOTE: This might be an inherent design limitation of Apache with respect to worker processes in hosted environments.

The bug was discovered 06/20/2007. The weakness was presented 05/29/2007 by Security Team as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-3303 since 06/20/2007. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 26023 (Apache 2.2.x < 2.2.6 Multiple Vulnerabilities (DoS, XSS, Info Disc)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers and running in the context r.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (34963), Tenable (26023), SecurityFocus (BID 24215†), OSVDB (37050†) and Secunia (SA26273†).
