Linux Kernel up to 7.0.12 misc fastrpc_get_args vm_start privilege escalation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 7.0.12 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function fastrpc_get_args of the component misc. The manipulation of the argument vm_start with an unknown input leads to a unknown weakness. The impact remains unknown. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: misc: fastrpc: fix DMA address corruption due to find_vma misuse fastrpc_get_args() uses find_vma() to look up the VMA for a user-provided pointer and compute a DMA address offset. When the address falls in a gap before the returned VMA, (ptr & PAGE_MASK) - vma->vm_start underflows, corrupting the DMA address sent to the DSP. Replace find_vma() with vma_lookup(), which returns NULL when the address is not contained within any VMA.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-53159 since 06/09/2026. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/25/2026).

Upgrading to version 5.15.210, 6.1.176, 6.6.143, 6.12.94, 6.18.36 or 7.0.13 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 2d0f47e27c1fa718b29c69aa7c96a2c5161bc2c2/708c17b52c60fe7a57e73b495bdee50f58feb48c/d3e26df2e8eb361e6bef096b2fd565476a1f14c4/e69e306a4cccb40a73511350cb280825a556ce3c/53e06f8a3c2b085c31bf1284e2ebcb8036e99625/7ba7b30ddb04646d4d638f4d8c4718a304bbbddd/464c6ad2aa16e1e1df9d559289199356493d1e00 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
