zephyrproject-rtos Zephyr up to 4.3 Network Packet release of resource

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in zephyrproject-rtos Zephyr up to 4.3. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component Network Packet Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a release of resource vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-772. The product does not release a resource after its effective lifetime has ended, i.e., after the resource is no longer needed. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

Zephyr's IPv6 network stack can be prevented from receiving or processing future incoming packets by sending a small number of maliciously fragmented IPv6 packets. When such a packet is handled by the fragment-header processing path, the associated RX network packet buffer (allocated from a memory slab) is not released back to the pool. Repeating the malicious packet exhausts all RX buffer slots, after which the device can no longer obtain RX buffers and stops receiving traffic, resulting in a denial of service.

The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-13351 since 06/25/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
