docling-project docling up to 2.90.x METS-GBS Backend data amplification

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in docling-project docling up to 2.90.x. This issue affects an unknown part of the component METS-GBS Backend. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a data amplification vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-409. The product does not handle or incorrectly handles a compressed input with a very high compression ratio that produces a large output. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

Docling simplifies document processing by parsing diverse formats and providing integrations with the generative AI ecosystem. From 2.45.0 until 2.91.0, the METS-GBS backend's XML parsing and the input document format detection lacked security controls. An attacker could craft malicious METS-GBS archives that, when processed, could read sensitive files, exhaust system resources, or cause application crashes. This vulnerability is fixed in 2.91.0.

It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-44018 since 05/04/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
