Linux Kernel up to 7.0.9 f2fs f2fs_sbi_show sb_lock out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Such manipulation of the argument sb_lock leads to out-of-bounds. This vulnerability is documented as CVE-2026-53303. There is not any exploit available. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.174/6.6.140/6.12.90/6.18.32/7.0.9. Affected by this issue is the function f2fs_sbi_show of the component f2fs. The manipulation of the argument sb_lock with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: f2fs: protect extension_list reading with sb_lock in f2fs_sbi_show() In f2fs_sbi_show(), the extension_list, extension_count and hot_ext_count are read without holding sbi->sb_lock. If a concurrent sysfs store modifies the extension list via f2fs_update_extension_list(), the show path may read inconsistent count and array contents, potentially leading to out-of-bounds access or displaying stale data. Fix this by holding sb_lock around the entire extension list read and format operation.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-53303 since 06/09/2026. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/26/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.1.175, 6.6.141, 6.12.91, 6.18.33 or 7.0.10 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch d3ff0c121bbaef026df6248ab7ef6f0b068b0647/cea15f66b7b68b2c50943a6660e0692c6635e4eb/4b3a1bf4c2ffd4c9595d900ead78c9035894a025/d0e877810baf613b018fd9747440b9d4d9db1428/ea3ab43a1f3cf2c7cecd75c8be1ee99a5e94a92e/5909bedbed38c558bee7cb6758ceedf9bc3a9194 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
