Linux Kernel up to 7.0.9 ALSA cx_probe uninitialized pointer

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 7.0.9. Affected by this issue is the function cx_probe of the component ALSA. The manipulation leads to uninitialized pointer. This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2026-53291. No exploit is available. It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 7.0.9. This issue affects the function cx_probe of the component ALSA. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a uninitialized pointer vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-824. The product accesses or uses a pointer that has not been initialized. The impact remains unknown. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ALSA: hda/conexant: Fix missing error check for jack detection In cx_probe(), the return value of snd_hda_jack_detect_enable_callback() is ignored. This function returns a pointer, and if it fails (e.g., due to memory allocation failure), it returns an error pointer which must be checked using IS_ERR(). If the registration fails, the driver continues to probe, but the jack detection callback will not be registered. This can lead to a kernel crash later when the driver attempts to handle jack events or accesses the uninitialized structure. Check the return value using IS_ERR() and propagate the error via PTR_ERR() to the probe caller.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-53291 since 06/09/2026. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/26/2026).

Upgrading to version 5.15.209, 6.1.175, 6.6.141, 6.12.91, 6.18.33 or 7.0.10 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 49c2c5924552e1d2f8b635dee663abebbb7cf63b/a2a33e87a2ffce3046c574d24eec4390c27c9365/d68f753d89f4ef6e410d7e8b7e8ab2fdde921b80/dd110cc00cf854a8ecd8d003127a4178c28574ea/f837c7b85143a7c54140ff41ad5c076b73cd9933/1da5c73f3793b224696617a2a21def7500ba18d6/b0e2333a231107adedd38c6fcfe1adc6162716fc is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
