Details
A vulnerability was found in Nlnet Labs Net Dns up to 0.x. It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function net::dns. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a authentication spoofing vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-290. This attack-focused weakness is caused by incorrectly implemented authentication schemes that are subject to spoofing attacks. This is going to have an impact on integrity. CVE summarizes:
Header.pm in Net::DNS before 0.60, a Perl module, (1) generates predictable sequence IDs with a fixed increment and (2) can use the same starting ID for all child processes of a forking server, which allows remote attackers to spoof DNS responses, as originally reported for qpsmtp and spamassassin.
The bug was discovered 06/20/2007. The weakness was released 06/27/2007 as Bug 245458 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-3377 since 06/25/2007. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67542 (Oracle Linux 4 : perl-Net-DNS (ELSA-2007-0675)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156067 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Perl-Net-DNS (ELSA-2007-0674)).
Upgrading to version 0.49_01 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
