Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in acl up to 2.5.x. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component Pathname. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a link following vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-59. The product attempts to access a file based on the filename, but it does not properly prevent that filename from identifying a link or shortcut that resolves to an unintended resource. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
attr before version 2.6.0 contains a symlink traversal vulnerability in the getfattr and setfattr utilities that allows local attackers to escalate privileges by replacing a pathname component with a symbolic link during directory hierarchy traversal. Attackers who control a pathname component can redirect getfattr and setfattr operations to arbitrary files by substituting a symlink, leading to local privilege escalation when getfattr or setfattr is invoked by a privileged process over an attacker-controlled path.
The weakness was released by Andrew Tridgell. The advisory is available at cgit.git.savannah.nongnu.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-54371 since 06/12/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
Upgrading to version 2.6.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cgit.git.savannah.nongnu.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
