A vulnerability was found in Python CPython up to 3.14.x. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function Tarfile.extract. The manipulation of the argument filter with an unknown input leads to a permissions vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-281. The product does not preserve permissions or incorrectly preserves permissions when copying, restoring, or sharing objects, which can cause them to have less restrictive permissions than intended. In the Tarfile.extract() function, the filter parameter is not passed properly when extracting hardlinks. An affected system that extracts content from untrusted tar files could end up writing files with an unexpected uid/gid despite the user passing filter='data' to the extract() function.
