A vulnerability classified as critical was found in electron-userland electron-builder and app-builder-lib up to 26.14.x. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function. electron-updater allows for automatic updates for Electron apps. Prior to 26.15.0, AppImage targets built by app-builder-lib could use an empty path component when setting the LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable at runtime. This causes the current working directory to be added to the dynamic linker search path, which may allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code by placing a malicious shared library in the directory from which the AppImage is launched. This issue has been fixed in version 26.15.0.
The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-54672 since 06/16/2026. The exploitation appears to be difficult. An attack has to be approached locally. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1574 for this issue.
Upgrading to version 26.15.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
