Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.0.12. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function regcache_maple_populate of the component pinctrl. The manipulation of the argument dev with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: pinctrl: mcp23s08: Initialize mcp->dev and mcp->addr before regmap init Regmap initialization triggers regcache_maple_populate() which attempts SPI read to populate cache. SPI read requires mcp->dev and mcp->addr to be set, without them, NULL pointer dereference occurs during probe. Move initialization before mcp23s08_spi_regmap_init() call.
