Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in BPS HTML::Gumbo up to 0.18 on Perl. Affected by this vulnerability is the function strlen in the library lib/HTML/Gumbo.xs. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a type confusion vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-843. The product allocates or initializes a resource such as a pointer, object, or variable using one type, but it later accesses that resource using a type that is incompatible with the original type. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
HTML::Gumbo versions before 0.19 for Perl disclose heap memory via type confusion. Support for the element was added to libgumbo 0.10.0 in 2015, but the walk_tree function in lib/HTML/Gumbo.xs was not updated to support it. The element was treated as a text-node, where strlen() over-reads the heap block that the pointer addresses. Any caller that runs parse() with the default format => 'string', or with format => 'tree', on input containing a element serializes the over-read bytes into the returned result, disclosing bounded heap contents. format => 'callback' reaches a croak on the unhandled node type and is unaffected.
The weakness was released by Vincent Lefevre as 15c0598909d4a64f47ef0a1abc5051f4e113c186. It is possible to read the advisory at github.com.
