Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in HashiCorp Vault and Vault Enterprise up to 2.0.0. Affected is an unknown code block of the component Audit Device Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
HashiCorp Vault and Vault Enterprise prior to 2.0.1 audit device validation logic did not consistently apply plugin directory protections when the legacy file audit path option was used. This vulnerability (CVE-2026-5051) is fixed in 2.0.1, 1.21.6, 1.20.11, and 1.19.17.
The advisory is shared for download at discuss.hashicorp.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-5051 since 03/27/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
