PHP up to 8.2.31/8.3.31/8.4.22/8.5.7 AES-WRAP-PAD Algorithm implementation heap-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as critical has been detected in PHP up to 8.2.31/8.3.31/8.4.22/8.5.7. This affects an unknown function of the component AES-WRAP-PAD Algorithm implementation. The manipulation leads to heap-based overflow. This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2026-14355. Remote exploitation of the attack is possible. No exploit is available. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in PHP up to 8.2.31/8.3.31/8.4.22/8.5.7. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component AES-WRAP-PAD Algorithm implementation. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In PHP versions 8.2.* before 8.2.32, 8.3.* before 8.3.32, 8.4.* before 8.4.23, 8.5.* before 8.5.8, the AES-WRAP-PAD algorithm implementation in OpenSSL extension contains a buffer allocation flaw. The output buffer for the AES key-wrap-with-padding operation is sized from the plaintext length without accounting for RFC 5649 expansion. This may cause OpenSSL to write beyond allocated memory, corrupting heap metadata and triggering application abort.

The weakness was published by Oleg Baturin as GHSA-7jrw-539f-x6vr. It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-14355 since 07/01/2026. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/06/2026).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 325144 (Debian dla-4669 : libapache2-mod-php8.2 - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 8.2.32, 8.3.32, 8.4.23 or 8.5.8 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (325144) and EUVD (EUVD-2026-41609). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
