The actual existence of this vulnerability is currently in question.
This issue is disputed due to the potential lack of crossing of security boundaries and the pre-requisites for a successful attack.
Details
A vulnerability was found in HdrHistogram up to 2.2.2. It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function org.HdrHistogram.AbstractHistogram.decodeFromCompressedByteBuffer of the file src/main/java/org/HdrHistogram/AbstractHistogram.java. The manipulation of the argument lengthOfCompressedContents with an unknown input leads to a memory allocation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-789. The product allocates memory based on an untrusted, large size value, but it does not ensure that the size is within expected limits, allowing arbitrary amounts of memory to be allocated. As an impact it is known to affect availability.
It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-14683. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
It is possible to download the exploit at github.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The real existence of this vulnerability is still doubted at the moment. This issue is disputed due to the potential lack of crossing of security boundaries and the pre-requisites for a successful attack.
