ImageMagick up to 7.1.2-14 Pixel Cache GetPixelIndex heap-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in ImageMagick up to 7.1.2-14. The affected element is the function GetPixelIndex of the component Pixel Cache. The manipulation results in heap-based overflow. This vulnerability is identified as CVE-2026-56362. The attack can be executed remotely. There is not any exploit available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in ImageMagick up to 7.1.2-14. Affected is the function GetPixelIndex of the component Pixel Cache. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

ImageMagick before 7.1.2-15 contains a heap-buffer-overflow read vulnerability in GetPixelIndex caused by OpenPixelCache updating image channel metadata before pixel cache memory allocation. Attackers can trigger memory and disk allocation failures to cause a heap-buffer-overflow read affecting any writer calling GetPixelIndex.

The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-56362 since 06/20/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 329308 (openSUSE 16: ImageMagick / ImageMagick-config-7-SUSE / etc (openSUSE-SU-2026:21391-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 7.1.2-15 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (329308). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
