A vulnerability was found in Chilkat Software Chilkat Zip ActiveX control 12.4.2.0. It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown code block in the library chilkatzip2.dll of the component ActiveX Control. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Absolute path traversal vulnerability in the Chilkat Software Chilkat Zip ActiveX control in ChilkatZip2.dll 12.4.2.0 allows remote attackers to create or overwrite arbitrary files via a full pathname in the argument to the (1) SaveLastError method and probably the (2) WriteExe method.
The weakness was disclosed 07/07/2007 by shinnai (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vupen.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-3633 since 07/09/2007. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
