Details
A vulnerability was found in Symantec Norton Antivirus up to 9.0.3 (Anti-Malware Software). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the Internet E-mail Auto-Protect feature in Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition before 10.1, and Client Security before 3.1, allows local users to cause a denial of service (service crash) via a long (1) To, (2) From, or (3) Subject header in an outbound SMTP e-mail message. NOTE: the original vendor advisory referenced CVE-2006-3456, but this was an error.
The bug was discovered 07/11/2007. The weakness was disclosed 07/11/2007 by Jordi Corrales (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at secunia.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-3771 since 07/15/2007. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The successful exploitation requires a single authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115625 (Symantec Client Security Internet E-mail Auto-Protect Stack Overflow (SYM07-016)).
Upgrading to version 9.0.4 eliminates this vulnerability.
