Details
A vulnerability has been found in Wireshark up to 1.0.1 (Packet Analyzer Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component Packet Assembler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
The fragment_add_work function in epan/reassemble.c in Wireshark 0.8.19 through 1.0.1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a series of fragmented packets with non-sequential fragmentation offset values, which lead to a buffer over-read.
The weakness was shared 07/15/2008 with Wireshark (Website). The advisory is shared for download at wireshark.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-3145 since 07/10/2008. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 830589 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117227 (CentOS Security Update for Wireshark (CESA-2008:0890)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at wireshark.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (43719), Tenable (830589), SecurityFocus (BID 30181†), OSVDB (46927†) and Secunia (SA31257†).
