Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Mozilla Firefox 2.0/2.0.0.1/2.0.0.2/2.0.0.3/2.0.0.4 (Web Browser). This affects the function settimeout. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. This is going to have an impact on integrity. The summary by CVE is:
Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Mozilla Firefox before 2.0.0.5 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script "into another site s context" via a "timing issue" involving the (1) addEventListener or (2) setTimeout function, probably by setting events that activate after the context has changed.
The bug was discovered 07/17/2007. The weakness was released 07/18/2007 by Martijn Wargers (moz_bug_r_a4) with Martijn Wargers (Website). The advisory is shared at secunia.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-3736 since 07/12/2007. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25739 (CentOS 3 / 4 : seamonkey (CESA-2007:0722)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156071 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for SeaMonkey (ELSA-2007-0722)).
