CA Threat Manager up to 7 alert.exe stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in CA Threat Manager up to 7. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the file alert.exe. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in the RPC implementation in alert.exe before 8.0.255.0 in CA (formerly Computer Associates) Alert Notification Server, as used in Threat Manager for the Enterprise, Protection Suites, certain BrightStor ARCserve products, and BrightStor Enterprise Backup, allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by sending certain data to unspecified RPC procedures.

The bug was discovered 07/17/2007. The weakness was disclosed 07/18/2007 by iDefense Labs with Computer Associates (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at supportconnectw.ca.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-3825 since 07/17/2007. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38586 (CA (Computer Associates) Alert Notification Server Multiple Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 8 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8941.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (35467), SecurityFocus (BID 24947†), OSVDB (36096†), Secunia (SA26088†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1018402†). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
