python-zeroconf Zeroconf up to 0.149.5 mDNS Service Discovery DNSIncoming._log_exception_debug buffer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in python-zeroconf Zeroconf up to 0.149.5 and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function DNSIncoming._log_exception_debug of the component mDNS Service Discovery. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

Zeroconf is a pure Python implementation of multicast DNS service discovery. Prior to 0.149.6, DNSIncoming._log_exception_debug and the four QuietLogger exception-dedup methods stored an unbounded _seen_logs dictionary keyed by attacker-influenced IncomingDecodeError messages, retaining sys.exc_info() tracebacks whose frame locals kept raw packet self.data buffers and allowing unauthenticated hosts on the local link over UDP/5353 (224.0.0.251 / ff02::fb) to drive memory growth until mDNS-dependent features degrade or the process is OOM-killed. This issue is fixed in version 0.149.6.

The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-47183 since 05/19/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

Upgrading to version 0.149.6 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at EUVD (EUVD-2026-45248). VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
