Details
A vulnerability was found in Secure Computing SecurityReporter 4.6.3 (Reporting Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the file file.cgi. The manipulation of the argument dontvalidate with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
file.cgi in Secure Computing SecurityReporter (aka Network Security Analyzer) 4.6.3 allows remote attackers to bypass authentication via a name parameter that specifies the eventcache directory and a non-GIF file, which causes the $dontvalidate variable to be set to true. NOTE: a separate traversal vulnerability could be leveraged to download arbitrary files.
The bug was discovered 07/23/2007. The weakness was shared 07/25/2007 by Oliver Karow (Website). The advisory is available at securecomputing.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-3986 since 07/25/2007. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25994 (SecurityReporter < 4.6.3p1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
