Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.33/7.0.10 and classified as very critical. This vulnerability affects the function statmount_mnt_idmap of the component Fs Statmount. The manipulation of the argument count with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds write vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-787. The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: fs/statmount: fix slab out-of-bounds write in statmount_mnt_idmap statmount_mnt_idmap() writes one mapping with seq_printf() and then manually advances seq->count to include the NUL separator. If seq_printf() overflows, seq_set_overflow() sets seq->count to seq->size. The manual seq->count++ changes this to seq->size + 1. seq_has_overflowed() then no longer detects the overflow. The corrupted count returns to statmount_string(), which later executes: seq->buf[seq->count++] = '\0'; This causes a 1-byte NULL out-of-bounds write on the dynamically allocated seq buffer. Fix this by checking for overflow immediately after seq_printf().
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-64074 since 07/19/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/19/2026).
Upgrading to version 6.18.34 or 7.0.11 eliminates this vulnerability.
