Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.141/6.12.91/6.18.33/7.0.10. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function debugfs_lookup of the component Pds Core. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: pds_core: fix debugfs_lookup dentry leak and error handling debugfs_lookup() returns a dentry with an elevated reference count that must be released with dput(). The current code discards the returned dentry without calling dput(), causing a reference leak on every firmware reset recovery. Additionally, when CONFIG_DEBUG_FS is disabled, debugfs_lookup() returns ERR_PTR(-ENODEV), not NULL. The current check passes for error pointers and would call dput() on an invalid pointer, causing a crash.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-64147 since 07/19/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 07/19/2026). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.
Upgrading to version 6.6.142, 6.12.92, 6.18.34 or 7.0.11 eliminates this vulnerability.
