This vulnerability is listed as CVE-2007-4004. In addition, an exploit is available.
Details
A vulnerability was found in IBM AIX 5.2.0/5.3 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function gets of the component FTP Client. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in the ftp client in IBM AIX 5.3 SP6 and 5.2.0 allows local users to execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors that trigger the overflow in a gets function call. NOTE: the client is setuid root on AIX, so this issue crosses privilege boundaries.
The bug was discovered 07/26/2007. The weakness was presented 07/26/2007 with iDEFENSE (Website). The advisory is shared at xforce.iss.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-4004 since 07/25/2007. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1756 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 29051 (AIX 5.3 TL 6 : bos.net.tcp.client (U812719)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family AIX Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (35627), Exploit-DB (4233), Tenable (29051), SecurityFocus (BID 25077†) and OSVDB (36785†).
