Linux Kernel 2.6.22 Random Number Generator transfer memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.22. Affected is the function transfer of the component Random Number Generator. Performing a manipulation results in memory corruption. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2007-3105. No exploit exists. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.22 (Operating System). This affects the function transfer of the component Random Number Generator. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Stack-based buffer overflow in the random number generator (RNG) implementation in the Linux kernel before 2.6.22 might allow local root users to cause a denial of service or gain privileges by setting the default wakeup threshold to a value greater than the output pool size, which triggers writing random numbers to the stack by the pool transfer function involving "bound check ordering". NOTE: this issue might only cross privilege boundaries in environments that have granular assignment of privileges for root.

The bug was discovered 06/07/2007. The weakness was disclosed 07/27/2007 with PaX Team (Website). The advisory is shared at issues.rpath.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-3105 since 06/07/2007. The exploitability is told to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 50 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67581 (Oracle Linux 5 : kernel (ELSA-2007-0940)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157333 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for Linux 4 kernel (ELSA-2007-0937)).

Upgrading to version 2.6.22 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (35860), Tenable (67581), SecurityFocus (BID 25348†), OSVDB (37288†) and Secunia (SA26500†). The entries VDB-3333, VDB-38265, VDB-38779 and VDB-38313 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
