Summary
A vulnerability described as critical has been identified in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.92/7.0.11. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the file net/sched of the component Netem. Executing a manipulation can lead to infinite loop. This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2026-63983. The attack can be launched remotely. No exploit exists.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.92/7.0.11. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the file net/sched of the component Netem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a infinite loop vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-835. The product contains an iteration or loop with an exit condition that cannot be reached, i.e., an infinite loop. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net/sched: fix packet loop on netem when duplicate is on When netem duplicates a packet it re-enqueues the copy at the root qdisc. If another netem sits in the tree the copy can be duplicated again, recursing until the stack or memory is exhausted. The original duplication guard temporarily zeroed q->duplicate around the re-enqueue, but that does not cover all cases because it is per-qdisc state shared across all concurrent enqueue paths and is not safe without additional locking. Use the skb tc_depth field introduced in an earlier patch: - increment it on the duplicate before re-enqueue - skip duplication for any skb whose tc_depth is already non-zero. This marks the packet itself rather than mutating qdisc state, therefore it is safe regardless of tree topology or concurrency.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-63983 since 07/19/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 07/19/2026). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.
Upgrading to version 6.12.93 or 7.0.12 eliminates this vulnerability.
