Linux Kernel up to 7.0.11 IPv6 rt6_fill_node infinite loop

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.175/6.6.142/6.12.92/6.18.34/7.0.11. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function rt6_fill_node of the component IPv6. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a infinite loop vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-835. The product contains an iteration or loop with an exit condition that cannot be reached, i.e., an infinite loop. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ipv6: fix possible infinite loop in rt6_fill_node() Sashiko reported this issue [1]. Apply the same fix as commit f8d8ce1b515a ("ipv6: fix possible infinite loop in fib6_info_uses_dev()"). Writers holding tb6_lock can list_del_rcu(&rt->fib6_siblings) without waiting for RCU readers; rt->fib6_siblings.next then still points into the old ring and this softirq-side walker never reaches &rt->fib6_siblings, causing a CPU stall. fib6_del_route() always WRITE_ONCE()s rt->fib6_nsiblings to 0 before list_del_rcu(), so an inside-loop check is a reliable detach signal. The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-63969 since 07/19/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/19/2026). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.

Upgrading to version 6.1.176, 6.6.143, 6.12.93, 6.18.35 or 7.0.12 eliminates this vulnerability.
