Details
A vulnerability classified as very critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.92/6.18.34/7.0.11. Affected is the function ethnl_update_profile of the component ethtool. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ethtool: coalesce: cap profile updates at NET_DIM_PARAMS_NUM_PROFILES ethnl_update_profile() walks the ETHTOOL_A_PROFILE_IRQ_MODERATION nest list with an index 'i' and writes new_profile[i++] without bounding i. The destination is kmemdup()'d at NET_DIM_PARAMS_NUM_PROFILES entries (5), but the Netlink nest count is entirely user-controlled. Netlink policies do not have support for constraining the number of nested entries (or number of multi-attr entries).
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-63987 since 07/19/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/19/2026).
Upgrading to version 6.12.93, 6.18.35 or 7.0.12 eliminates this vulnerability.
