Summary
A vulnerability marked as very critical has been reported in Linux Kernel up to 7.1.2. This affects the function keyctl_pkey_params_get_2 of the component Keys. This manipulation causes buffer overflow.
This vulnerability appears as CVE-2026-63824. The attack requires local access. There is no available exploit.
Details
A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.1.2. Affected by this vulnerability is the function keyctl_pkey_params_get_2 of the component Keys. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: KEYS: fix overflow in keyctl_pkey_params_get_2() The length for the internal output buffer is calculated incorrectly, which can result overflow when a too small buffer is provided. Fix the bug by allocating internal output with the size of the maximum length of the cryptographic primitive instead of caller provided size.
It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-63824 since 07/19/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/20/2026).
