Linux Kernel up to 7.1.2 F2FS is_meta_ino input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.176/6.6.143/6.12.94/6.18.37/7.1.2. Affected is the function is_meta_ino of the component F2FS. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: f2fs: validate compress cache inode only when enabled F2FS_COMPRESS_INO() uses NM_I(sbi)->max_nid as the synthetic inode number for the compressed page cache inode. That inode only exists when the compress_cache mount option is enabled. When compress_cache is disabled, max_nid is outside the valid inode range. A corrupted directory entry that points to ino == max_nid should therefore be rejected by f2fs_check_nid_range(). However, is_meta_ino() currently treats F2FS_COMPRESS_INO() as a meta inode unconditionally, so f2fs_iget() bypasses do_read_inode() and its nid range check, and instantiates a fake internal inode instead. Gate the compressed cache inode case on COMPRESS_CACHE, matching f2fs_init_compress_inode(). With compress_cache disabled, ino == max_nid now follows the normal inode path and is rejected as an out-of-range nid.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-63817 since 07/19/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. Additional levels of successful authentication are needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/19/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.1.177, 6.6.144, 6.12.95, 6.18.38, 7.1.3 or 7.2-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability.
