Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Nessus Vulnerability Scanner 3.0.6. Affected is an unknown code in the library scan.dll of the component ActiveX Control. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Directory traversal vulnerability in a certain ActiveX control in Nessus Vulnerability Scanner 3.0.6 allows remote attackers to create or overwrite arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in the argument to the saveNessusRC method, which writes text specified by the addsetConfig method, possibly related to the SCANCTRL.ScanCtrlCtrl.1 ActiveX control in scan.dll. NOTE: this can be leveraged for code execution by writing to a Startup folder.

The bug was discovered 07/26/2007. The weakness was published 07/30/2007 by Krystian Kloskowski with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is available at nessus.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-4061 since 07/30/2007. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication.
