Details
A vulnerability was found in RsyncProject rsync up to 3.4.2. It has been classified as problematic. This affects the function chmod/chown of the component chroot. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Rsync is a file-copying tool that uses a delta-transfer algorithm to synchronize remote and local files. In versions prior to 3.4.3, previous bug fixes for symlink races in open() calls missed races in other path based system calls like chmod() and chown(). For rsync daemons with "use chroot = no" this allows an attacker with local filesystem access to change permissions, ownership or timestamp on a file outside the exported module. This issue is fixed in version 3.4.3.
The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-44509 since 05/06/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
Upgrading to version 3.4.3 eliminates this vulnerability.
