Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in IBM DB2 Universal Database up to 8.1 (Database Software). This affects an unknown part of the component DB2 Commands. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple format string vulnerabilities in IBM DB2 Universal Database 8.1 may allow local users to execute arbitrary code via certain command line arguments to (1) db2start, (2) db2stop, or (3) db2govd.
The weakness was released 11/07/2003 by KF with SNOSoft as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2003-1051 since 08/19/2004. The attack needs to be done within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
After 1 days, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at www-3.ibm.com.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (13633), Exploit-DB (23346), SecurityFocus (BID 8989†), OSVDB (9500†) and Secunia (SA10173†).
