A vulnerability has been found in Joomla CMS up to 1.5 Beta (Content Management System) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the file default_results.php of the component com_search. Multiple eval injection vulnerabilities in the com_search component in Joomla! 1.5 beta before RC1 (aka Mapya) allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary PHP code via PHP sequences in the searchword parameter, related to default_results.php in (1) components/com_search/views/search/tmpl/ and (2) templates/beez/html/com_search/search/.
The weakness was published 07/22/2007 as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-4187 since 08/07/2007. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.
By approaching the search of inurl:default_results.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25992 (Joomla! CMS com_search Component 'searchword' Parameter RCE), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses.
Upgrading to version 1.5.0_beta eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5513.
