ntfs.c in fsstat in Brian Carrier The Sleuth Kit (TSK) before 2.09 interprets a certain variable as a byte count rather than a count of 32-bit integers, which allows user-assisted remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) and prevent examination of certain NTFS files via a malformed NTFS image.
The weakness was disclosed 07/26/2007 with isec (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-4200 since 08/07/2007. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
Upgrading to version 2.08 eliminates this vulnerability.
