Summary
A vulnerability was found in FFmpeg up to 8.1.2. It has been declared as critical. The affected element is the function vk_hevc_end_frame of the component Vulkan HEVC hardware decoder. Such manipulation of the argument vps_num_hrd_parameters leads to stack-based overflow.
This vulnerability is listed as CVE-2026-64831. The attack may be performed from remote. There is no available exploit.
Details
A vulnerability was found in FFmpeg up to 8.1.2 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function vk_hevc_end_frame of the component Vulkan HEVC hardware decoder. The manipulation of the argument vps_num_hrd_parameters with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
FFmpeg versions 8.0 through 8.1.2 contains a stack buffer overflow vulnerability in the Vulkan HEVC hardware decoder that allows remote attackers to overwrite return addresses and adjacent stack frames by supplying a crafted HEVC/H.265 bitstream. Attackers can embed a malicious vps_num_hrd_parameters value exceeding HEVC_MAX_SUB_LAYERS in any supported container format to overflow stack-allocated arrays in the vk_hevc_end_frame function, potentially achieving arbitrary code execution.
The advisory is shared for download at code.ffmpeg.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-64831 since 07/20/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 07/22/2026).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
