FFmpeg up to 8.1.2 TDSC video decoder tdsc_parse_tdsf out-of-bounds write

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in FFmpeg up to 8.1.2 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function tdsc_parse_tdsf of the component TDSC video decoder. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds write vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-787. The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

FFmpeg versions 2.7 through 8.1.2 contain an out-of-bounds write vulnerability in the TDSC video decoder that allows remote attackers to cause heap corruption by supplying a crafted AVI file that changes frame dimensions across TDSF frames. The tdsc_parse_tdsf() function fails to unreference the existing reference frame before calling av_frame_get_buffer(), causing tdsc_blit() and tdsc_yuv2rgb() to write attacker-controlled pixel data beyond the end of the undersized reference frame buffer, resulting in a process crash and potential code execution.

It is possible to read the advisory at code.ffmpeg.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-65703 since 07/22/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely.
