Linux Kernel up to 6.18.38/7.1.3 fuse-uring fuse_uring_commit data authenticity

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.38/7.1.3. Affected by this issue is the function fuse_uring_commit of the component fuse-uring. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a data authenticity vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-345. The product does not sufficiently verify the origin or authenticity of data, in a way that causes it to accept invalid data. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: fuse-uring: fix EFAULT clobber in fuse_uring_commit copy_from_user() returns the number of bytes not copied as an unsigned residual on failure (1..sizeof(struct fuse_out_header)). fuse_uring_commit stores that residual in ssize_t err, sets req->out.h.error to -EFAULT, then jumps to out: with err still holding the positive residual. err = copy_from_user(&req->out.h, &ent->headers->in_out, sizeof(req->out.h)); if (err) { req->out.h.error = -EFAULT; goto out; /* err is the positive residual */ } ... out: fuse_uring_req_end(ent, req, err); fuse_uring_req_end() then runs if (error) req->out.h.error = error; which overwrites the just-assigned -EFAULT with the positive residual. FUSE callers such as fuse_simple_request() test err < 0 to detect failure, so the positive value is interpreted as success and the caller proceeds with an uninitialised or partial req->out.args. Fix by assigning err = -EFAULT in the failure branch before jumping to out, so fuse_uring_req_end() receives a negative errno and sets req->out.h.error to -EFAULT.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-64264 since 07/19/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/25/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.18.39, 7.1.4 or 7.2-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 0483fffdeeb363f320e6bf5fc0f0306007507306/fe604c08d874648a69187f6380e5c7858627dc04/3a0a8bc51a13951c5141262bf770eeea3e0b6228 is able to eliminate this problem.
