Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.177/6.6.144/6.12.95/6.18.38/7.1.3. This affects the function vfs_clone_file_range/vfs_copy_file_range of the component ksmbd. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ksmbd: require source read access for duplicate extents FSCTL_DUPLICATE_EXTENTS_TO_FILE passes the source file directly to vfs_clone_file_range() or vfs_copy_file_range() without checking the SMB access mask granted to the source handle. A handle opened with attribute access can consequently be used to copy file contents into an attacker-readable destination. Require FILE_READ_DATA on the source handle before either VFS operation, matching other ksmbd data-copy paths.
It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-64395 since 07/19/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/25/2026). The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
Upgrading to version 6.1.178, 6.6.145, 6.12.96, 6.18.39, 7.1.4 or 7.2-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability.
